Chironji is an Indian medicinal plant. Its botanical name is Buchanania latifolia Roxb and belongs to Anarcardiacease family. Chironji is commonly known as Charoli or Chiranji. The evergreen tree of Chironji is straight and consists of cylindrical trunk. It heightens up to 15 meters with dry, rough and dark grey barks. Chironji is a dry deciduous plant and bears flowers which are greenish brown in color and are followed by single drupe like fruits. These drupes contain Chironji seeds. Essential oil is extracted from these Chironji seeds by means of steam distillation. It emits pleasant and slightly acidic aroma with slight acidic taste.

Essential oil of Chironji is used in treating ulcer, fever, diarrhea,asthma, whooping cough, bowel disorder and biliousness. It is a powerful tonicand helps in improving body and brain functions. History

Nigella seeds have been referenced in the Bible, in the book of Isaiah in the Old Testamentwell known spice, used as far back as the Stone Age by the evidence in archaeological digs. The Egyptians used it as a flavouring in foods, the Romans in bread-making, and in the Middle Ages it found popularity among the Germans and Austrians in their cooking.
